Discovering Ely Place’s unique history

01. Historic St Etheldreda’s Church

One of the oldest churches in London. It was built between 1250 and 1290 as the town chapel for the Bishops of Ely forming part of their London residence. It is still in liturgical use today.
02. Ely House (Ely Palace)

The Bishops of Ely’s residence dating back to the 13th century. The building has not survived to the present date, but is remembered in Ely Place’s name.
03. Ye Olde Mitre

Most likely the oldest pub in London. Opened in 1546 and still a popular venue today, commonly cited as one of London’s iconic historic pubs.
04. Bleeding Heart Yard

A cobbled courtyard commemorating the urban legend of the murder of Lady Elizabeth Hatton in 1626.
